A trademark that is registered is valid for 10 years at which point it must be renewed. The trademark registrar will mail you a notice of expiry of the trademark six months before the date of expiration. If you want to renew a trademark, you have two options to choose from:

I. Renew the trademark in the same way it is
II. Renew the trademark through modifications and changes

  • The application to renew a trademark follows using the format "TM-R".
  • The application doesn't have to be submitted by the trademark's owner It can be filed by an authorized agent or representative.
After filing the form, the applicant must follow what happens to the file if an opposition is filed against the trademark's registration. The opposition could be filed by any member of the general public.

  • Once the application has been approved, that trademark is published by the Official Gazette called the Trademark Journal.
  • If the trademark was published, the owner of the trademark is protected for a further 10 years.
  • The trademark may be renewed.
The cost of renewing a trademark varies based on whether the renewal was done in person or has been conducted online.

  • If it is filed physically, the renewal application is priced at 10,000 rupees.
  • If it is done online using e-filing, it will cost you 9000 rupees

Documents Required for Trademark Renewal in Chennai:

  • A copy of registration certificates
  • Copy of the form the TM-A (the form used to submit the initial application to register the trademark)
  • The applicant's ID and address proof.
  • Power of attorney when the person applying for it is an authorized representative or agent
